Rock the Casbah naît lorsque le batteur Topper Headon arrive tôt au studio et enregistre seul une base comprenant batterie, piano et basse. Les autres membres de The Clash ajoutent ensuite leurs parties, tandis que Joe Strummer écrit des paroles inspirées par l’idée d’un dirigeant interdisant la musique rock. Le morceau tranche avec l’image punk brute du groupe par son groove dansant et ses claviers. Ironie cruelle : Headon, miné par son addiction, est renvoyé peu avant que la chanson ne devienne leur plus grand succès américain. L’architecte musical du tube ne participe donc pas à la période où il triomphe.
Rock the Casbah began when drummer Topper Headon arrived early at the studio and recorded a foundation by himself, including drums, piano and bass. The other members of the Clash later added their parts, while Joe Strummer wrote lyrics inspired by the idea of a ruler banning rock music. Its danceable groove and keyboards differed from the band’s raw punk image. In a cruel irony, Headon was dismissed because of his addiction shortly before the song became their biggest American hit. The track’s main musical architect was no longer in the group when it achieved its greatest success.
