Johnny Cash had long been fascinated by prisons and prisoners, although he never served a lengthy sentence himself. On January 13, 1968, he recorded two concerts at Folsom State Prison in California. In front of an intensely responsive audience, he opened with Folsom Prison Blues and created an atmosphere no studio could reproduce. His record company doubted the project’s commercial potential, but At Folsom Prison became both a critical and popular success.
