Creep offre à Radiohead son premier succès international, mais devient rapidement un poids. Creep gave Radiohead its first international success, but it quickly became a burden. Thom Yorke had written the song before the band’s final formation, and it was recorded almost accidentally during sessions focused on other material. Jonny Greenwood’s abrasive guitar blasts before the chorus reportedly began as an attempt to disrupt a song he found too gentle; they became its defining sound. After years of audiences constantly demanding Creep, Radiohead nearly stopped performing it. The band then built its reputation by moving in almost the exact opposite direction from its first hit.
