En octobre 2002, Kanye West est victime d’un grave accident de voiture à Los Angeles. Sa mâchoire est fracturée et doit être maintenue par des fils métalliques. Quelques semaines plus tard, alors qu’il est encore en convalescence, il enregistre Through the Wire en rappant avec la mâchoire partiellement immobilisée. Le titre utilise un sample accéléré de Through the Fire de Chaka Khan et transforme l’accident en récit de survie. La chanson devient son premier single majeur comme artiste principal. West, jusque-là surtout reconnu comme producteur, utilise littéralement sa blessure pour imposer sa voix de rappeur.
In October 2002, Kanye West was seriously injured in a car crash in Los Angeles. His jaw was fractured and wired shut. Only weeks later, while still recovering, he recorded Through the Wire, rapping with his jaw partly immobilized. The track used a sped-up sample of Chaka Khan’s Through the Fire and turned the accident into a survival story. It became West’s first major single as a lead artist. Until then known mainly as a producer, he used the physical reality of his injury to establish his own voice as a rapper.
