À Woodstock, Jimi Hendrix devait jouer le dimanche soir. Les retards accumulés le font finalement monter sur scène le lundi matin, devant une foule déjà largement dispersée. Au milieu de son set, il interprète The Star-Spangled Banner à la guitare électrique. Les larsens, glissés et explosions sonores évoquent autant l’hymne national que les sirènes, les bombes et le chaos de la guerre du Vietnam. Hendrix expliquera qu’il trouvait simplement cette interprétation « belle ». La séquence, à la fois patriotique et inquiétante, devient pourtant l’image musicale la plus durable du festival, alors même qu’une grande partie du public était déjà repartie.
At Woodstock, Jimi Hendrix was scheduled to perform on Sunday night. Delays pushed his appearance to Monday morning, when much of the crowd had already left. During the set, he played The Star-Spangled Banner on electric guitar. Feedback, bends and bursts of noise made the anthem sound like sirens, bombs and the chaos of the Vietnam War. Hendrix later said he simply thought the interpretation was “beautiful.” Both patriotic and unsettling, the performance became the festival’s most enduring musical image, even though only a fraction of the original audience was still there to witness it.
