Le son spectaculaire de batterie associé à In the Air Tonight vient d’une découverte réalisée pendant les séances de Peter Gabriel. Dans le studio, un micro destiné à la communication entre les musiciens reste ouvert et passe par un compresseur puissant. Lorsque Phil Collins joue, les cymbales et les fûts prennent une ampleur explosive tout en s’arrêtant brutalement : c’est l’effet de gated reverb. L’ingénieur Hugh Padgham et Collins développent ensuite cette technique. Le célèbre break d’In the Air Tonight devient l’une des signatures des années 1980. Une configuration utilitaire, presque accidentelle, avait créé tout un langage de production.
The huge drum sound associated with In the Air Tonight grew from a discovery made during Peter Gabriel sessions. A microphone intended for studio communication was left open and heavily compressed. When Phil Collins played, the drums sounded enormous but stopped abruptly, creating what became known as gated reverb. Engineer Hugh Padgham and Collins developed the technique further. The famous drum break in In the Air Tonight became one of the defining sounds of the 1980s. A practical studio setup, discovered almost by accident, had created an entire production language.
