Le 3 juillet 1973, au Hammersmith Odeon de Londres, David Bowie annonce avant Rock ’n’ Roll Suicide que le concert est « le dernier que nous ferons jamais ». Le public et plusieurs musiciens pensent qu’il met fin à sa carrière. Bowie parle en réalité de Ziggy Stardust et des Spiders from Mars, le personnage et le groupe qui l’ont rendu célèbre. Cette disparition théâtrale lui permet d’échapper à une identité devenue envahissante et d’inventer la suivante. En supprimant son personnage au sommet de sa popularité, Bowie transforme la réinvention artistique en partie intégrante de son œuvre.
On July 3, 1973, at London’s Hammersmith Odeon, David Bowie announced before Rock ’n’ Roll Suicide that the show was “the last show that we’ll ever do.” Fans and even some musicians thought he was retiring. Bowie was actually ending Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, the character and band that had made him famous. The theatrical disappearance allowed him to escape an identity that had begun to consume him and to create the next one. By killing off his most successful persona at its peak, Bowie made artistic reinvention part of the artwork itself.
