En février 1980, le chanteur Bon Scott meurt alors qu’AC/DC commence à préparer un nouvel album. Le groupe envisage de s’arrêter, puis décide de continuer avec Brian Johnson, encouragé par la famille de Scott. En quelques semaines, les musiciens enregistrent Back in Black aux Bahamas avec le producteur Robert John “Mutt” Lange. La pochette entièrement noire et le titre fonctionnent comme un hommage sobre à leur ancien chanteur, sans transformer l’album en requiem. Le disque devient l’un des plus vendus de tous les temps. AC/DC avait réussi à faire d’un deuil un nouveau départ sans effacer celui qui l’avait précédé.
In February 1980, singer Bon Scott died just as AC/DC was preparing a new album. The band considered ending, then decided to continue with Brian Johnson, encouraged by Scott’s family. Within weeks, the musicians recorded Back in Black in the Bahamas with producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange. The all-black cover and title served as a restrained tribute to their former singer without turning the record into a requiem. The album became one of the best-selling releases of all time. AC/DC had turned grief into a new beginning without erasing the person who came before.
