Elle fait référence à Teen Spirit, un déodorant porté par Tobi Vail, alors proche de Cobain. Celui-ci ignore la marque et interprète la phrase comme un slogan révolutionnaire. Il l’utilise pour nommer une nouvelle chanson. Lorsque Smells Like Teen Spirit devient un succès mondial, Cobain découvre seulement après coup l’origine commerciale de l’expression. Une plaisanterie privée, née d’un produit ordinaire, est ainsi devenue le titre emblématique d’une génération qui rejetait précisément le marketing et les étiquettes.
