Bohemian Rhapsody ne ressemblait à aucun single traditionnel : près de six minutes, aucune structure couplet-refrain classique, une ballade, un passage d’opéra et une fin hard rock. Le groupe superposa tellement de voix que certaines bandes magnétiques devinrent presque transparentes. EMI hésitait à sortir un morceau aussi long, mais Freddie Mercury et Queen refusèrent de le raccourcir. Le DJ Kenny Everett en diffusa des extraits à répétition, provoquant une demande avant même la sortie officielle. Ce qui semblait commercialement impossible devint un immense succès et prouva qu’un titre radicalement atypique pouvait conquérir le grand public sans se conformer aux règles de la radio.
Bohemian Rhapsody sounded unlike any conventional single: nearly six minutes long, with no standard verse-chorus structure, moving from ballad to mock opera and hard rock. Queen layered so many vocal parts that sections of the magnetic tape reportedly became almost transparent. EMI hesitated to release such a long track, but Freddie Mercury and the band refused to shorten it. Radio presenter Kenny Everett repeatedly played portions of the song, creating demand before its official release. What seemed commercially impossible became a worldwide hit and proved that a radically unusual song could reach a mass audience without obeying radio’s usual rules.
