Someone Like You est écrite par Adele avec le musicien Dan Wilson à la fin de la création de l’album 21. Alors que la production de nombreux titres devient ample et orchestrée, cette chanson reste fondée sur une voix et un piano. La prise enregistrée avec Wilson sert d’abord de démo, mais son émotion paraît difficile à reproduire. Elle est finalement conservée presque telle quelle pour l’album. Lors des Brit Awards 2011, Adele l’interprète seule avec un pianiste et provoque une réaction considérable. La chanson rappelle qu’une production minimale peut parfois sembler plus grande qu’un arrangement spectaculaire lorsqu’elle laisse toute la place au récit.
Adele wrote Someone Like You with musician Dan Wilson near the end of the making of 21. While many tracks on the album received large, polished arrangements, this song remained built around voice and piano. The recording made with Wilson was initially treated as a demo, but its emotion proved difficult to recreate. It was ultimately kept almost unchanged for the album. At the 2011 Brit Awards, Adele performed it with only a pianist and caused an enormous public reaction. The song demonstrated that minimal production can feel larger than a spectacular arrangement when it leaves the story completely exposed.
