Le 25 mars 1983, Michael Jackson interprète Billie Jean lors d’une émission célébrant les vingt-cinq ans de Motown. Vêtu d’une veste noire, d’un pantalon court, de chaussettes blanches et d’un seul gant, il exécute quelques secondes de moonwalk. Le pas existait déjà dans la culture street dance, mais sa diffusion à la télévision devant des dizaines de millions de téléspectateurs le transforme en phénomène mondial. Jackson dira avoir été déçu par sa propre performance, notamment parce qu’il n’était pas resté assez longtemps sur la pointe des pieds. Le public, lui, venait d’assister à la naissance d’une image indissociable de son nom.
On March 25, 1983, Michael Jackson performed Billie Jean during a television special celebrating Motown’s twenty-fifth anniversary. Wearing a black jacket, short trousers, white socks and a single glove, he performed a few seconds of the moonwalk. The move already existed in street dance culture, but its broadcast to tens of millions of viewers turned it into a global phenomenon. Jackson later said he was disappointed with the performance, especially because he had not held the toe stand long enough. The audience, however, had just witnessed the creation of an image that would remain inseparable from his name.
