Gaye refuse d’enregistrer autre chose tant qu’elle ne sort pas. Le single rencontre finalement un immense succès, ouvrant la voie à l’album du même nom. En tenant tête à son label, Marvin Gaye obtient davantage de contrôle artistique et transforme la soul populaire en espace de commentaire social.
After the death of his singing partner Tammi Terrell and hearing stories from his brother returning from Vietnam, Marvin Gaye wanted to address war, poverty, ecology and police violence. What’s Going On broke with the romantic hit formula Motown expected from him. Berry Gordy initially considered the song uncommercial and hesitated to release it. Gaye refused to record anything else until it came out. The single became a major success and opened the way for the album of the same name. By standing up to his label, Gaye gained greater artistic control and turned popular soul into a space for social commentary.
