Keith Richards raconte s’être réveillé dans une chambre d’hôtel avec le riff de (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction en tête. Il l’enregistre rapidement sur un magnétophone portable, puis se rendort. Le lendemain, la bande contient quelques minutes de guitare suivies d’une longue séquence de ronflements. Richards imagine d’abord le riff joué par des cuivres, mais une pédale fuzz donne à la guitare ce son agressif immédiatement reconnaissable. Le morceau devient le premier grand numéro un américain des Rolling Stones. Une idée capturée avant de disparaître, presque entre sommeil et réveil, suffit à définir durablement le son du groupe.
Keith Richards recalled waking in a hotel room with the riff to (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction in his head. He quickly recorded it on a portable tape machine and went back to sleep. The next morning, the tape contained a few minutes of guitar followed by a long stretch of snoring. Richards initially imagined the riff being played by horns, but a fuzz pedal gave the guitar its instantly recognizable aggressive sound. The song became the Rolling Stones’ first major American number one. An idea captured before it vanished, somewhere between sleep and waking, helped define the band’s sound forever.
