For Good Vibrations, Brian Wilson abandoned the idea of recording a song from beginning to end in one studio. Over several months, he worked in different Los Angeles studios, recorded fragments with changing groups of musicians, then assembled the sections like a film director editing scenes. The cost was extraordinary for a single at the time. The track combined vocal harmonies, cello, percussion and Electro-Theremin in a constantly shifting structure. This unusual modular method turned the studio itself into a composing instrument. Good Vibrations became a worldwide hit and anticipated a new way of building pop music, piece by piece.
