Purple Rain n’était pas seulement une chanson : Prince voulait construire tout un film autour de son univers scénique et de sa musique. Le projet, risqué pour un artiste encore loin d’être une superstar mondiale, mêlait fiction, éléments autobiographiques et performances du groupe The Revolution. La chanson-titre fut enregistrée en concert à Minneapolis, puis retravaillée en studio. Le film et l’album se renforcèrent mutuellement jusqu’à transformer Prince en icône internationale. Purple Rain montra qu’un artiste pouvait concevoir musique, image, personnage et narration comme une seule œuvre, bien avant que l’expression « univers de marque » devienne courante dans l’industrie musicale.
Purple Rain was more than a song: Prince wanted to build an entire film around his stage world and music. The project was risky for an artist who had not yet become a global superstar, blending fiction, autobiographical elements and performances by the Revolution. The title track was recorded live in Minneapolis and later refined in the studio. The film and album amplified one another, turning Prince into an international icon. Purple Rain demonstrated that an artist could design music, image, character and narrative as one unified work, long before “brand universe” became common language in the music industry.
